Carrick on Shannon Hosts 2017 Ireland and UK Purple Flag Awards

Carrick on Shannon Hosts 2017 Ireland and UK Purple Flag Awards

Carrick on Shannon hosts the Spring 2017 Irish and UK Purple Flag Awards on Wednesday, February 8th. Don't be surprised if the town looks particularly purple this week as local businesses, shop, cafes and lighting in the town attains a purple hue. Carrick on Shannon is very proud to be offered the opportunity of hosting the Awards by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) and Purple Flag Ireland. 9 Towns from the UK will travel to Carrick on Shannon to obtain their Purple Flag Standard as well as a number of Irish towns.

Irish Towns who have Purple Flag status will also attend the Irish Network of Purple Flag Towns taking place in the town on Wednesday afternoon. The Purple Flag standard awarded to towns, similar to the Blue Flag for beaches, aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between the hours of 18:00 & 05:00. Towns awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant mix of entertainment while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

Carrick on Shannon was the smallest town in Ireland to achieve this prestigious standard in 2015 and each year the town has to ensure it maintains or improves on the standard achieved. Carrick on Shannon’s Purple Flag Steering Group is comprised of local business, local authority staff and elected members, Tidy Towns and Gardai. The initiative is funded by Carrick on Shannon chamber of Commerce and Leitrim County Council and co-ordinated by the Economic Development Unit of Leitrim County Council.

Shortly, we will be offering the general public their chance to again participate in the Purple Flag process by giving their opinion on the town through a Public Perceptions Survey which is an integral part of the Purple Flag application process to find out how you the public and visitors to the town rate experience the various aspects of day and night time activity in the town.
